Constructed on a high, rocky hillock, from which there is a magnificent view
of the basin of the Giudicarie Esteriori mountains, the Castle had a role ot prińary
strategic and political importance as stronghold of the territory west of Trento.
Frotn the second half of the XIII century it becarne episcopal property as owell
as seat of the Captain of the Giudicarie. The imposing building, enclosed by a
high surrounding wall is the result of various amplifications: next to the so colled
" Casa Murata ", (walled in house), the oldest Castel construction (XII centurv)
erected by bishop Adalpreto, the Palazzo Nuovo can be found. it was built in
Romanesque from the XIII century and conserves the ancient Judgement and
Council rooms, the Palazzo di Giovanni Hinderbach, concluded in 1447, but
redecorated during the following century with valuable frescoes commissioned
bv the bishop prince Bernardo CIes, to whom we also owe the renaissance loggia,
erected in 1538 tu join the medieval buiIdings, look out onto the third courtyard.
The eastern part ot the Castle is made up of buibdings dating back to the XII
centurv, and in the Palazzo di Nicoḷ there is an ancient chapel to St. Martin with
an impottant series of medieval frescoes (XIII and XV centuries) recently
discovered and restored. Various rooms are furnished with paintings, forniture,
metal weapons and firearms and antique utensils for ev ery day use, all coming
from the collections of the " Castello del Buoneonsiglio " of which the Castello
di Stenico is a subsidiary.
