Castel Thun is one of the most intcresting examples of castle architectore in

Trentino. From the second half of the XIII century it was, the seat of the homonymous and powerful Trentino farnily which in the Non and Sole valleys

possessed other prestigious residences, such as Castel Bragher and the Castles

of Caldes and Castelfondo. The castle, built on a wide hill near Vigo di Ton in a

stupendous panoranžic position, is enclosed by a complex system of fortifications

made up of towers, half-moon shaped ramparts, moat and patrol walkway; the

impossing porta spagnola, (Spanish Gate 1566) was constructed with massive

ashlar-work hewn stones arranged radiallv and open at the centre of the northern

joining wall. Once beyond the gate of the drawbridge ( 1541) and the first courtyard,

in its turn marked by a long colonnade made up of eighteen imposing stone

columns one cornes to the entrance of the Palazzo Cornitale. Once inside, adorned

by an elegant renaissance loggia, there are many rooms, all magnificently

furnished; among these the most valuable is the " stanza del vescovo ", ( bishops

room) which is cornpletely lined with Cembra pine wood, with a beamed lacunar

ceiling and a monuntental door (1574) sustained bv horizorital beams, gables and

columns, The castle chapel, dedicatcd to St. George, conserves an interesting series

of frescoes of the German school dating back to the second half of the XV ccntury.

Castel Thun, acquired by the Autonomous Province of Trento in 1992, has becorne

the fourth seat of the museum  " Castello del Buonconsiglio ". << Monumenti e

collezioni provinciali >> and it wilI be opened to the puhlic after restoration work
